CapabilitiesStudents may have difficulties dealing with all the adjustments of a new school or class. Many of my clients are Texas Tech students, as well as students from K-12 grades. I coordinate closely with the school teachers and counselors, and most parents seem to want this. Some students have behavioral problems in school. Others may have difficulty learning material, or relating well with other people. Many options are explored for dealing with these situations. Abuse issues are troubling and difficult to handle. Many clients have experienced abuse in their past, and remain haunted by these memories. As individuals, many clients have come from abusive childhood families, and they want to change and become good parents and individuals. They are usually committed to stopping the cycle of abuse because they know how much this was hurt them. This may include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. There are also on-going abuse situations, which need to be handled quickly. Alcohol and drug abuse issues are often problems areas in someone’s life. Many clients are able to handle these on their own, and others seek treatment and 12 step programs. Dr. Phil is the newest TV guru, and presents many useful ideas to the general public. If clients are familiar with his ideas, and want to use them, we do so. If they can’t stand them, we use other approaches.
